If you have young readers at home, books with repetitive text are a must. These books help children to participate in the reading process as they can chime in when you are reading aloud. It makes reading fun and helps develop oral language.
When children repeat the phrases, their confidence develops and also improves fluency.
So if you want your children to soar in their reading skills, start by reading them books with repetitive text.
My top favorite are:
Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell is a book about a boy who wants a pet and writes to the zoo. The phrase, “So they sent me a _______.” gets repeated along with “He was too ______. I sent him back.” Children love lifting the flaps to see the animals and repeating the phrases.
Another one that you should have in your collection is called Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Eric Carle. All books by Eric Carle have great educational value and this one with its repetitive text is engaging and captures the young child's attention instantly.
This is an interesting read and children love to sing the cute song that is part of the story line. And the ending is hilarious which makes this book a favourite among children.
This is a super adorable book about Mrs. Wishy Washy’s farm and her animals who do not like to take a bath, so they decide to run away. The rhyming text makes it an interactive and an interesting read.
The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle is another gem that you should add in your collection. The story is a bit long but captivating nonetheless. When you come to the repetitive phrase in the book, "Do you wanna fight?", encourage children to join in and ask them to guess whether the lady bug will fight or not?
There are many more books that you can add to the above list but these five are fabulous and will help you kick start read aloud time with your child and build their oral language skills.
