I have yet to come across a child who doesn't enjoy the festival of Holi. Imagine being allowed to get soaked in colours and water without getting reprimanded by grownups! The riot of colours, delicious sweet treats, fun time with friends and family, songs and music, makes this festival enjoyable for most.
And you can make the festival of Holi even more enjoyable for your littles. The list of learning activities, games, crafts, books and more will help you make this festival extra special for your students or little ones. So get ready for some fun by scrolling down.
Art and Craft
1. Coloured People!
This coloured people craft is perfect for Holi. We cut out a silhouette from thick construction paper and taped it down in a cardboard box. We added blobs of paint and some marbles.
We closed the box and shook it with all the force we could muster. Please do ensure that the box is closed properly if you want to contain the mess.
Voila! The beautiful coloured people are ready.
2. Blow Painting!
This is another fun way to make coloured people or simply a riot of colours on a plain sheet of paper. All you need for this art activity is a straw, some diluted water paints and a paper or a template of a person just like in the picture above.
Put the blobs of paint on paper and ask the child to blow on the paints through a straw. Encourage the child to keep blowing till the paint spreads and you have a colourful art piece.
3. Pichkari/Water Gun Craft!
Check out this adorable craft to make your very own Pichkari/Water gun. Get a free template for this craft by clicking on the picture below
4. Colour In A Bag!
This super cool outdoor idea is perfect for toddlers/preschoolers. Fill up zip lock bags with diluted water colours. Attach bamboo sticks/ chopsticks to the bags. Spread plain sheets of paper on the floor. Make a hole or two at the bottom of the bags when ready to paint. Let your child walk around and enjoy dropping coloured paint on the sheets. Use this time to name and talk about the colours.
5. Balloon Art!
This is another easy idea for 2 and 3 year old's. Simply blow water balloons and give children paint . Encourage them to dip the balloons in paint and press on paper.
Making marks on paper is a fun way to build the fine motor skills that later help with handwriting.
Please remember little children will need a lot of hand holding and modelling from your end. A watchful eye will be needed for kids who tend to put things in their mouth.
Learning Activities
1. Wet the letters
This super fun activity can be used to practice letters, numbers, sight words or any other concept. Write letters with water colours on a sheet of paper. Give the water gun to children and let them spray water on the letter been called out.
Another version of 'Wet the letter' Game.
2. Learn names of Hindi Colours!
Sing this adorable song and introduce your little ones to the names of colours in Hindi.
3.Vocabulary Balloons!
We practiced our vocabulary words with this fun balloon game. We air filled the balloons and wrote the names of words we were practicing. We played a song and passed the basket around the circle. When the music stopped, the person with the basket had to pick any balloon and read the word. Once the child explained the meaning they had to burst the balloon to get a point. The person with most points will be the winner of the game.

Books
No learning can be complete without books. The list of books mentioned below are perfect for children in the age group of 2-7 years. All the books have cute illustrations and interesting stories about why the festival is celebrated. My personal favourite is the 'Festival of Colors' by Kabir Sehgal and Surishtha Sehgal. It takes the reader on a colourful journey and shows how a family gets ready for Holi. The illustrations are adorable and the story line is catchy and simple to read.
