3 fun suggestions to teach children about Dussehra !

Dussehra is an Indian festival celebrated every year with gaiety and grandeur in all parts of India. There are several mythological tales linked to this day but the most popular, especially among children is the story of Ramayana. It depicts the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana who had kidnapped Sita to seek revenge of his sister Shurpanakha.

We read a lot of stories to learn about this festival and one of our top reads is by Bhakti Mathur. She has written a lot of mythological books for children and the illustrations and the story line is always captivating.

One more fun read to add to your collection is 'Dussehra', that explains why we celebrate the festival.

Other than the story of Ramayana, another tale that is associated with Dussehra, is the victory of Goddess Durga over the evil demon Mahishasura. Hence reading to children about goddess Durga makes perfect sense during this time.

We use the book called Durga which introduces the goddess to children through beautiful illustrations and a very simple yet effective narration.

Most children love art and crafts and its always fun to create during the festival season. Our all time favourite is the Ravana Puppet that is super easy to make. You simply need to download the template and print. Let children colour and decorate. Add a popsicle stick or a paper cup to use as a puppet. Use it to enact the story of Ramayana.

We love to incorporate math and literacy into the theme we are learning. Our Dussehra math pack helps you to do the same. Get this resource for free by clicking on the picture.

Hope you can use these ideas and make learning enjoyable for children.
